What is NIL in College Sports?
NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness, and it refers to the rights of college athletes to profit from their own name, image, and likeness. Historically, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) had strict rules prohibiting college athletes from receiving compensation beyond their scholarships. However, in recent years, there has been a significant shift in policies regarding NIL rights.
The changes are significant for college athletes who can now benefit financially from their athletic success while still maintaining their collegiate eligibility. The specific rules and regulations surrounding NIL rights can vary, and they may continue to evolve, so it’s advisable to check the latest updates from the NCAA or relevant sports authorities.
