SU Football NIL Reaffirms Commitment to Compliance and Growth Following CSC Guidance
August 18, 2025 — SU Football NIL, the official Name, Image, and Likeness collective supporting Syracuse University football, today affirmed its continued operation and support for student-athletes in light of the College Sports Commission’s (CSC) updated guidance on the “Valid Business Purpose” (VBP) standard under NCAA Bylaw 22.1.3.
The revised CSC guidance establishes a clear framework that ensures NIL agreements are directly tied to real commercial activity. SU Football NIL fully supports these criteria and remains confident in its ability to work effectively and transparently with student-athletes in compliance with both the CSC and Syracuse University policies.
“We are confident that we can not only comply with the revised NIL framework but also thrive under it,” Joe Burton, Founder and CEO of SU Football NIL. “This guidance strengthens accountability and opens the door for innovative partnerships that benefit our athletes, fans, and community.”
The new guidance also offers an opportunity for previously stalled or denied NIL proposals to be reevaluated, which Burton believes will streamline processes and improve access for athletes looking to capitalize on their name, image, and likeness.
“We are here for the long term,” Burton added. “With the 2025 football season fast approaching, we are excited about the future—this year and for many years to come. Our mission remains unchanged: to create meaningful opportunities for Syracuse football student-athletes and to do so the right way.”
SU Football NIL will continue to monitor developments around the VBP standard and remains committed to operating with transparency, integrity, and full compliance as the NIL landscape continues to evolve.
What is NIL in College Sports?
NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness, and it refers to the rights of college athletes to profit from their own name, image, and likeness. Historically, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) had strict rules prohibiting college athletes from receiving compensation beyond their scholarships. However, in recent years, there has been a significant shift in policies regarding NIL rights.
The changes are significant for college athletes who can now benefit financially from their athletic success while still maintaining their collegiate eligibility. The specific rules and regulations surrounding NIL rights can vary, and they may continue to evolve, so it’s advisable to check the latest updates from the NCAA or relevant sports authorities.
